2020  NAHJ Announces honorees of the ‘NAHJ President’s Award,’ ‘NAHJ Sí Se Puede Award’

and the ‘NAHJ ¡Dale.
Award’ (WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) will honor Ramon Escobar with the NAHJ President’s Award, Esmeralda Bermudez with the NAHJ Sí Se Puede Award and Iliana Limón Romero with the NAHJ ¡Dale.

Award at the #NABJNAHJ2020 Convention & Career Fair on Saturday

August 8, 2020.  Ramon Escobar, vice president of talent recruitment and development for CNN Worldwide, will be this year’s recipient of the NAHJ President’s Award — the highest honor given out by the national board president.
This award will be presented to Escobar during the annual NAHJ Gran Baile at the close of #NABJNAHJ20.  Hugo Balta.

“Whether it is pushing me to produce content that is fair and accurate, nurturing a newsroom environment that is collaborative, or reframing diversity and inclusion as a problem to be solved to an opportunity to be realized, Ramon has been an important resource for me.” Esmeralda Bermudez, staff writer at the LA Times will be awarded with the NAHJ Sí Se Puede award, recognizing the persistence she has shown in her newsroom, the tenacity in her work, and the ability to help mobilize others to build community.   Iliana Limón Romero, sports editor of the Orlando Sentinel, is this year’s recipient of the NAHJ ‘Dale’ award.
This award is given to an individual or organization that has gone above and beyond to ensure fair and accurate representation of Latinos in the media.  “The dedication, ferocity and incredible talent of these individuals has bettered the news industry and brought attention and respect to the Latinx community,” said Alberto B.

“We are very proud to be recognizing outstanding journalists, Ramon, Esmeralda, and Iliana this year with the 2020 NAHJ Awards.” NAHJ would like to congratulate everyone who is honored with an award this year for their commitment to put more Latinos in news!   Meet the 2020 award recipients:  Ramon Escobar has been the Vice President of Talent Recruitment and Development for CNN Worldwide since 2012.
He is responsible for the recruitment of all on and off-air talent for CNN U.S., CNN International, CNN en Español and HLN.
He also advances the internal development of all anchors, correspondents, contributor and producers.
Before, Escobar served as the vice president of diversity and inclusion for CNN Worldwide from January 2017 to June 2019, and continues to play a vital role in diversity and inclusion efforts for WarnerMedia News and Sports, the parent company of CNN.
Before joining the CNN team, Escobar was part of the Telemundo team; his roles included executive vice president of network news, senior executive vice president of entertainment and senior vice president of news and creative services.
Escobar also dedicates time to teaching classes as a visiting faculty member at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies and is a lifetime member of NAHJ.
Esmeralda Bermudez writes narrative stories about the lives of Latinos for the Los Angeles Times.
She was born in El Salvador, raised in the Los Angeles area and graduated from the University of Southern California.
Before joining The Times in 2008, Bermudez worked at the Oregonian in Portland, covering city government and immigration.
She has reported from Mexico and Guatemala where her coverage in 2006 won her the Guillermo Martinez-Marquez Award for Latin American Reporting.

Bermudez was also a finalist for Livingston Award for International Reporting

In 2016, she was part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the San Bernardino terrorist attack.
Iliana Limón Romero is sports editor at the Orlando Sentinel.
The El Paso, Texas, native previously worked at The Albuquerque Tribune, first as a news reporter and later covering college athletics.
Limón Romero joined the Sentinel in 2007 and covered UCF athletics for four years before moving into editing.
She is president of the NAHJ Central Florida chapter.
